The Government Chemist and a team of doctors are conducting a thorough investigation into the connection between a machete, ‘Jack Daniel Whisky’ and a soft drink, ‘Sprite’, and the death of renowned local movie star Stephen Kanumba who died at the age of 28 yrs old.
Speaking to reporters in his office on Monday, the Kinondoni Regional Police Commander, Charles Kenyela, said the police are also examining details on two mobile phones that were used by Kanumba and his girl friend Elizabeth Michael, alias ‘Lulu’.
He said Lulu who is a prime suspect was safe in the police custody, but was nursing some minor injuries sustained during a fight with Kanumba. The latter reportedly hit her with a machete (panga) resulting in injury to her private parts.
The items and the postmortem of the body would help uncover the mystery surrounding the cause of the star’s sudden and shocking death, the RPC said.He said the police were also examining the handset allegedly used by Lulu in a conversation feared to have sparked the quarrel between the two, in Kanumba’s bedroom.
“We are not in a position to say when she would be arraigned in court, she is in police custody at the moment, until we are satisfied with the investigation,” he said. The RPC said though the law stipulates that a suspect must be charged within 24 hours of his or her arrest, that depends on the nature of the case being investigated, saying Lulu’s case was exceptional.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, Mizengo Pinda, has directed Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Said Meck Sadiki to oversee the burial of the late Kanumba. The premier made the directive on Monday when he visited Kanumba’s home at Sinza Vatican in Dar es Salaam to console friends and relatives.
Mr Pinda also directed the RC to make sure that there would be proper use of the city roads during the burial. At the late Kanumba’s residence, the family spokesperson said a tug of war had ensued between his parents on the place of burial, but that has since been resolved and their son would be buried today at Kinondoni cemetery.
Mr Mtitu Game who is also Chairperson of the burial committee told the ‘Daily News’ that Kanumba’s mother Ms Flora Mtegoa and his father Mr Charles Kanumba would take part in the burial of their son.According to Mr Game, Ms Mtegoa arrived on Sunday while Kanumba’s father was expected to arrive today from Shinyanga after connecting a flight at Mwanza airport.
“We sent him an air ticket and we expect him today. He will be accompanied by Mjanahili Kanumba and Faraja Kanumba,” he said.Mr Game also said last respects would be paid on Tuesday at the Leader’s Club ground at around 10 am as soon as the body arrives from the Muhimbili National Hospital.
